We are again the BIM Champions 2023!
We feel honored to be recognized once again by buildingSMART Germany as BIM Champion 2023! Together with Peter Gross Infrastruktur GmbH & Co. KG, we won the award in the Construction Execution / Construction Supplier category with the project “IFC Mapping BIM2Site: Digital Twin for the reconstruction of the A8 – Plieningen junction” against strong competition from Implenia Hochbau GmbH and Xella Group International!
On the eve of the 20th buildingSMART User Day in Stuttgart on May 9, 2023, buildingSMART Germany announced the BIM Champions 2023 in five categories:
- Innovation / Technology / Solutions
- Planning
- Construction / Suppliers
- Sustainability
- Students / Trainees
The competition entry submitted included the creation and analysis of a 5D model of the Plienigen junction on the A8 highway. To this end, a parametric BIM model was first created using as-built data and expanded to include costs and scheduling.
Five use cases (UCs) were developed in the parametric BIM model, which implement BI on the construction site based on the analog input data without waiting for the planning and tendering to be digitized. The use cases were based on classic processes and digitally enhanced. In the next step, the digitalization process was used to set up the digital twin to display the construction execution of the five UCs:
- The re-engineering of a road trough structure (UC 1)
- Drainage (UC 2)
- The alignment (UC 3)
- Model framework planning (UC 4)
- Schedule networking (UC 5)
From this, the necessary work steps were evaluated in terms of effort, benefits, automation, and data and model expansion. Furthermore, specifications for structuring a construction project for digital mapping were derived. Finally, recommendations for action were developed for a construction company for future projects using BIM.
Jury member Heinrich Lünenschloß said of our project: “We as the jury were particularly impressed by the level of detail with which the project participants dealt with the unusual BIM use cases. Despite the challenge of bringing together a wide variety of information sources in the digital inventory twin and evaluating them with sometimes complex interfaces, the viewer is always made aware of the overarching goal and every step in the overall process of the project is explained and visualized in detail. It is also impressive that the project was accompanied from service phase 2 through to the as-built model after completion and that even thoughts on maintenance and sustainability were taken into account. All of this was carried out and completed while maintaining product openness, genuine collaboration, and the use of open BIM standards. The protagonists’ enthusiasm for the project and for the BIM method is palpable, and the viewer can clearly see the positive learning curve that the project has brought for everyone involved.”
The BIM Champions 2023 were honored at the buildingSMART evening reception in Stuttgart, which was attended by more than 360 guests. We accepted the award together with Peter Gross Bau and would like to thank them for their great collaboration.
